What is the significance of the title of my next post? A free copy of "ABC's of Chess Openings" for whoever gets it (quite possibly the worst purchase I have ever made in chess).

"ABC's of Chess Openings" as in book? Or ChessBase training CD? I've got the material from the ChessBase CD, and i can't say that it's bad.

The Chessbase CD. I absolutely hate it, and am very happy to send it, free of charge, to the person who "gets" the title of my next post...It is only serving to enrage me on my desk, so it will be a benefit to be rid of it.

Would you care to explain why you hate it? I have only quickly glanced at it a couple of times (since i try to keep from getting to much involved in openings at the time, which is always a seductive subject to be studying), but the material offered seems pretty good to me.

The instruction was awful. The videos had no content. It basically says to look at these games for an example of X, but doesn't clearly explain X.

It was a database with a few comments. Awful for a beginner like me. I truly want to get rid of it.

And how about all of the annotated material. The games and examples are all quite heavily annotated. You did make sure the ChessBase reader was in training mode, right?
Well, too bad to hear you're having bad experiences with this material. But don't let it scare you away from anything else they offer.

A bunch of annotated games is not useful at my level. I hve found books that have been much better for me, with much better explanation of principles and use of examples.

Perhaps if I ever reach ~1600 the Chessbase stuff will have more appeal for me. So far, Fritz is the only thing by them I have liked. They don't know how to put together a decent instruction manual, for one thing!

Hmm... Ok.

Again too bad to see you're having negative experiences with CB.
