Catch 22 at ICC

Set noescape to 1, and get two winning positions in a row and have your connection shit out on ya' in both games, losing 50 rating points (this just happened, and I am PISSED).

Set noescape to 0, and jerkoffs disconnect when they start losing, or when they decide you are moving too slow, or if their baby's face is on fire. Pussies.

There is no optimal solution. God is dead.

Meet my friends "resume" and "request-win".

I should work at a collection agency.

If I had to choose between the risk of my connection shutting off versus the risk of some pimple pinching eurotrash disconnecting, I'll take the risk on my connection. The escape artists are far more common. I also set quietplay 2, no chatty chatty with El Cajon in Lisbon or wherever the mouth is.

LMAO to both. I guess it all depends how bad your connection is. Mine has shorted out three times in the past week, so I might have to go back to noescape 0 as all the games were wins.

On FICS if someone disconnects in a lost position and refuses to resume, the admins will adjudicate the game for you. Does ICC have a similar process?

Antonio: The worst is when Jacque Pierre Clousseau from Sudan says "Hola me gusta disconnecto."

Likeforests: yes, they have that, and I've used it a few times. But it is still a pain in the rump. Not as bad as disconnecting for a loss!

agree totally. i have no escape. but this applies, as i recall, only if BOTH players elect it, no?

i seem to recall some games where dudes still leave, much to chagrin... and it all baffles me, but dont wish to think about it.

when folks leave, at equal or minus, and especially +, you know what i do? i prep myself with serious analysis. its their problem then! when they leave and dont come right back, its any mans game in my book.

especially in bullet, knowing what is going to be resumed at very fast play, carefully, is a real advantage, and few if any look at their adjurnments... i think...

agree with paleMornDun: if i had to bet on my connect or someone elses, id bet on mine.

sorry this happened to you. there seems to be a jerk every day on the internet in chess, the ones who say how you cannot play after youcw demonstrably beaten them, and most sorrowfully, the ones who beat you again and again then say LOL.

my practice is to say as little as possible, but you know all this already.

keep playing. you are better than all this!

DK: yes, adjourment means any computer or other analysis is legit.

It is easier to not care when it isn't my precious slow games, of which I play only 4-6 a week. When it's blitz I don't give a hoot.

I play on FICS, which also has noescape as an option, and while I am annoyed when opponents disconnect, I am much more worried about losing a game by having my connection die or my client crash.

Having someone disconnect in a losing position is just about as satisfying for me as actually completing the win. Either way you're smashing face, right?

Don't worry about it, your rating is just an indicator, it'll level out back to your real strength as you play more games. Just console yourself in the fact that you know you really won the games. It's something you have to live with in online chess. I just smile and ignore the people who first of all request a draw when they're clearly losing, then they request abort when they see a mate coming, then they run the clock down till they've got 2mins left, then they just disconnect or send abusive messages. All we can do is add these people to our noplay lists.

the special 5-minute variant on ICC has an automatic forfeit on disconnection. it's one of the reasons I prefer it over 5 0 in regular blitz. no fuzz, the rules are set, you get set up with an opponent of similar strength almost immediately. I like it.

I have quietplay=2 set as well, no distractinve in-game chatting whatsoever for me please. and I always get the feeling that someone chatting during a blitz game is just trying to hustle me for time.

How hard would it be to determine if the disconnect was due to the user (e.g., he entered the 'close' command or shut down his computer) versus problems with the network (no such command was given: the computer simply fell off the network).

Any of you code ninjas know?

Antonio Pedro,
Yeah, but I bet there are spaniards in Lisbon, no? There is an El Cajon in every village, town, and City in this wide world. I was being figurative, and know the difference, however, I'm not here to fight, just love. Unless of course you drop off the server when I have the win, in which case I will kill you dead. No joke. I mean bidness.

One thing that I do that never seems to work is keep a running list of people that disconnect are are rude in my personal notes on the server. If you were thinking of doing this, don't it doesn't work. The Portuguese will still disconnect on your ass.
